'Teamwork makes the dreamwork', is one of Lorna’s favourite mantras. Here at Beyond Breakout, we are a small, (but perfectly formed) team and after the last 18 months we realise that our favourite mantra has become more important than ever. Now that life is returning to ‘normal’ and people are returning to the workplace, companies are thinking of ways to build team morale and improve relationships. If you have already played an escape room, then you will know how much fun they are, (and here, FUN, is the centre of everything we do!) But did you know, escape rooms are the perfect team building activity? If you're looking for a novel team-building activity that's effective and fun, an escape room could be the answer, and here are 5 reasons why. 1. Co-operation and teamwork Playing an escape game together is an excellent way to get to know people better in a relatively short space of time. Everyone has a balanced role, and are working together to achieve a common goal, which gives the group a huge sense of achievement and closeness. 2. Problem solving In order to be successful and escape the room within the time limit, the team must collaborate to find clues, complete tasks, and solve a variety of puzzles, which will require some creative thinking. Solving the problems may not always be straightforward, and teams may not get right answers first time, but rather than curling in a ball and giving up, an escape room encourages players to try again and find a different solution. 3. Communication Effective communication is essential in any team. In an age where many team members have been communicating via email and video calls, the social nature of an escape room can really help awaken those skills. When you are in a limited space, with limited time to escape, speaking and listening skills, are crucial. You have to listen to each other; it is a simple as that. Every voice matters, you can’t keep your thoughts to yourself, as every bit of information may be vital for your team’s successful escape. Post-game, your team will be animated and talk about where they excelled, what they could do better and when they can play another game! 4. Time management Our Escape rooms have a time limit in which the game must be completed. This time limit creates a huge sense of urgency as each member of the team collaborates towards the same final objective. 5. Promotes Positive Mental Health Solving puzzles stimulates both side of the brain, which improves mental health, mental clarity and heightens our memory power. Playing the game can trigger the secretion of a hormone called serotonin (the happy chemical) which keeps us excited and happy. Most importantly, we hear a lot of laughter coming from our escape rooms, and laughter is indeed the best medicine! 6. Ok, I know I said 5 reasons at the beginning, but I just want to squeeze a sneaky 6th reason if I may, and that is: Affordable.
